Poem: Temporary Things

~ I wrote this poem after the passing of my dog, Asia, in 2006.  Yes, I've had a few dogs throughout the years, losing them is never easy.

It's not enough
to say "I miss you."

Do you think the sage
grass feels the heaviness
in my steps,
the way my foot arches
to curl itself around
something soft

anything...will do

to quiet the crunch
of falling tears
like Autumn leaves
surrendering to the promise
of green beyond the brown
in this season of decay

Clutching wish stones
in my hands,
chanting your name
strangling the words
"Believe" and "Faith"
that abandoned me
when death emptied
your breath
in the hallway

I don't want to accept
the answers,
the outstretched wings
gathering me in,
the ache in my heart

The stars tell me
we are temporary things
as you were--
as I am

But still I wait for you
because time is all I have
